A decisive step toward African digital sovereignty

Libreville, Gabon – 27 mars 2025

After being selected last February to build Gabon’s National Data Center, PORTEO is today taking a major step forward by symbolically laying the foundation stone of the site, in close collaboration with Cybastion and the Gabonese government.

This official ceremony, held at the Cité de la Démocratie in Libreville, marks the concrete start of work on this essential infrastructure — a true cornerstone of Gabon’s digital strategy.

Toward strengthened digital sovereignty

“We are living in a pivotal time. Africa is at a turning point in its digital history, and Gabon is leading the way by making digital sovereignty a national priority,” said Mr. Yaya KONATÉ, Managing Director of PORTEO BTP Gabon.

This data center will enable Gabon to manage its strategic data autonomously and securely, in line with PORTEO’s pan-African vision of technological sovereignty. This initiative directly contributes to strengthening economic resilience, national security, and stimulating digital growth for the country and the region.

“By laying this first stone, we are giving form to a vision of technological independence. This data center is much more than just a construction project — it represents political will, a strong strategic partnership, and a commitment to future generations.”

Hassan Dakhlallah, Chairman of the Board of Directors, PORTEO

The Digital Fast Track project: a catalyst for digital transformation

This data center is a key component of the Digital Fast Track project, which also includes the launch of Gabon’s digital identity initiative and DigiEmpower training programs aimed at strengthening the digital skills of young Gabonese. This ambitious project reflects Gabon’s commitment to modernizing its overall digital infrastructure and promoting accelerated and secure digital inclusion.

Technical expertise in support of an ambitious vision

Building on its successful experience constructing the Tier III+ Data Center in Côte d’Ivoire, PORTEO is reaffirming its role as a leader in the development of critical digital infrastructure in Africa. With highly skilled teams and engineering aligned with international standards, the group ensures top-tier execution and optimal data security.

“This project embodies the union of technical excellence and social impact. We are proud to leverage our expertise to lay the concrete foundation for Gabon’s digital sovereignty.”
Yaya Konaté, Managing Director of PORTEO BTP Gabon

“Building a data center means securing one’s digital future — it creates the foundation for a more resilient, inclusive, and innovative economy,” Mr. KONATÉ added.

A strategic driver for employment and training

This project goes beyond physical infrastructure. It also includes the training of over 1,000 young Gabonese, thereby strengthening the local digital skills ecosystem in partnership with Cisco and Cybastion. This initiative is fully aligned with PORTEO Group’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive development.

A strong and lasting international partnership

This major achievement is made possible through a strategic partnership with Cybastion and the support of the United States, represented on this occasion by the U.S. Ambassador to Gabon. This collaboration highlights the strength of the ties between Africa and the United States in advancing an innovative and secure digital future.
